Karli Butcher

I consider this part of my freelance work, as I have been commissioned to create specific buildings for my clients. Each drawing is sketched out, colored with Copic markers, and then details are added with ink pens.

The Building series,

is an ongoing project to help promote small businesses and      my illustration style. Created for the Bristol Christmas Festival,      I decided to continue this project afterward as an illustration exercise but also to share online and promote the business itself.

From promoting these drawings I have been reposted and messaged online by most of the businesses and have even engaged with my audience by asking what buildings they        want to see.

The illustrations reflect the ones created by our younger selves and help connect with our inner child. The fun illustrations allow for interesting spreads, personalized for each recipe. To create this book, illustrations were first drawn in a sketchbook, then transferred to adobe illustrator, and drawn with the pen tool.

Professionally printed, The Family recipe has been sold in past fairs and is currently being sold now. With adding this cookbook to your household, it’s main goal is allowing the connection between family recipes and remembering memories while also creating ones to reflect on in the future.

The Family Recipe,

created as a senior design project this aims to unite families through the creation and remembrance of our memories.  The curation of recipes comes from multiple family favorites passed down through generations inviting you to create new memories to cherish in the future.

On top of being professionally printed for sale, the main idea behind The Family Recipe was engaging the senses and bringing you back to a time and place when you once cooked with your family. To accomplish this, I hand-made paper and incorporated spices that corresponded to the certain recipe to make the pages smell as if you were already cooking them.

For example, Grammy’s Pumpkin Whoopie Pie, seen in the photo to the left, contained pumpkin and vanilla extract and cinnamon. Aunt’s Apple crisp contained apple pie spice, cinnamon, and vanilla extract.
